Elle Russ is a writer, actor, health/life coach, and host of the Primal Blueprint Podcast. She is becoming the leading voice of thyroid health in the burgeoning Evolutionary Health Movement (also referred to as Paleo, Primal, or Ancestral Health). Elle has a B.A in Philosophy from The University of California at Santa Cruz and is a certified Primal Health Coach. She sits on the advisory board of The Primal Health Coach Program created by Mark Sisson, bestselling author of THE PRIMAL BLUEPRINT. Originally from downtown Chicago, she lives and plays in Malibu, CA.
After eating a low-fat and low-carb diet instead of exercising, Elle believes she gave herself hypothyroidism, which can be acquired or inherited.
Elle wrote The Paleo Thyroid Solution, which seeks to understand what it is that doctors are getting wrong about nutrition and to fight some of the old paradigms. The bottom line is that doctors are not taking the right tests and they are steeped in outdated practices.
A high fat diet is only detrimental when it is accompanied by a high carb diet, since your body will have problems processing the fat because of the glucose.
Most people fix their thyroid problems but don’t see any changes because they do not realize that they suffer from insulin resistance.
The only thing to do in a situation of insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes) is to go low-carb or live a high-fat low-carb paradigm. It can both correct and prevent type 2 diabetes. A paleo primal lifestyle is the ultimate in blood glucose management and also adrenal management.
Where do you fall in the whole grass-fed/corn-fed craze? Some people can’t afford it.
Paleo Primal is cheaper in the long run because you eat less food and it is calorically efficient. It is expensive for people at the beginning but, for example, Trader Joe’s has great grass fed steak that is cheap.
If you have to eat non-grass-fed animals, don’t eat the fat around it and put butter on it instead (preferably grass fed butter).
Frozen vegetables is the cheapest option.
